Bricolage is the skill of using whatever is at hand and recombing them to create something new.
The course intended students to think and work like a bricoleur through the idea of repair.
Course began with discussion on various references on various aspects of a bricoleur's practices.
Aesthetics, politics, mechanics and biography were some of these aspects.
Simultaneously we started recognizing our own practices of repair or had a chance of repair.
my habit of not being able to finish movies and series because of fear of it ending and what to do after it ends came up.
We started the process of making as a bricoleur by building a dairy for ourselves that responded our practice of repair. I made a dairy of infinite fold , a dairy which had no start and no end.
The dairy was a companion everywhere from note taking in class to sketches of derives to referencing and diagraming.
Every week we would take a derive in the city , looking for stories of bricoleurs and seeing the city as a bricolage. One such derive was in Versova.
To take my individual practice ahead I started watching films and series which worked with idea of endlessness , looping and branching of stories like Om Dar-B-Dar, Mononoke , Tatami's galaxy, Manifest , The witness ( love death robots ) .
After watching these I diagramed various tropes used in the films to create endlessness.
As the studio progressed an idea of a garden as a collective came in , a garden where all works of bricoleur would come together. The garden worked with 5 tropes Body, Homely and Unhomely , Silence , Feast and Library.
A short exercise of sketching and diagraming helped us how our intervention as a bricoleur would come together with idea of garden.
These diagrams came from various things that happened during the course of the studio, from references discussed in the studio , from derives in the city , from tropes of the films all of these came together with intuition.
After a discussion of these diagrams in the studio a idea of am endless chair came in for me.
A generic chair covered with mirror. The chair became a Bricolage of realities, illusion and reflections when placed in the garden. Thus merging and being endless with the garden.
